Dr. Jess Andrade talks Sleep | Dallas Metro Moms

Can you share your background, why sleep is so important and your stance on melatonin?

My name is Dr. Jess Andrade, I’m a board-certified physician and sports medicine doctor with expertise in sleep health. Sleep is important because it’s one of the fundamental steps one can take to improve wellness, achieve success and live a more present life. Melatonin may be incorporated into your nightly routine to accomplish a more regulated sleep schedule, along with more evidence based holistic practices, such as reducing blue light before bedtime, regular exercise and relaxation routines.

Is melatonin safe for kids to take?

Melatonin is generally considered safe for children when used as directed under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It’s essential to consult a pediatrician before giving melatonin to a child, as dosage and timing considerations can vary based on age and individual health factors.

When do you as a parent know if you should introduce melatonin into your bedtime routine?

As a parent, understanding your child’s sleep patterns and any issues they may have falling asleep can help determine if melatonin use is appropriate. This decision should be made in consultation with your pediatrician who can assess your child’s specific sleep issues.

Is there a time period to use melatonin for?

Melatonin is typically recommended for short-term use to address specific sleep issues, like temporary disruptions to the sleep schedule. However, in some cases, it may be used for more extended periods under the guidance of your pediatrician.

What are the side effects and benefits of using melatonin?

Melatonin use can have benefits such as improved sleep onset and quality, especially for individuals with certain sleep disorders or disruptions. However, it’s essential to be aware of the potential side effects like drowsiness, headaches, and dizziness. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve with discontinuation of the supplement.
